How can I get through to someone who's built up walls because they've been hurt?

When someone has built emotional walls due to past hurt, it requires patience, empathy, and understanding to break through. Start by creating a safe and supportive environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment or rejection. Active listening is crucial - show genuine interest in their feelings and experiences, and validate their emotions. Avoid being judgmental or dismissive, as this can further reinforce their defensive barriers. Instead, offer empathy and reassurance that you're there to support them unconditionally. It's also essential to respect their boundaries and give them the space they need to process their emotions at their own pace. Building trust takes time, so be patient and consistent in your efforts to connect with them. Eventually, as they begin to feel more secure in the relationship, they may gradually lower their emotional walls and allow themselves to be vulnerable with you.
